Students cheered loudly and social studies teacher Stan Lane stood with a stunned smile on his face, as representatives of OfficeMax opened the lid to a giant cardboard box with over $1,000 worth of school supplies inside. The Wentzville OfficeMax has selected Mr. Lane as the local winner of “A Day Made Better,” a national event founded by OfficeMax and Adopt-A-Classroom, a nonprofit organization.

The event recognizes 1,000 teachers across the country for going above and beyond in the classroom. SMS Principal Scott Swift nominated Stan for the award because of his passion, innovation, and dedication to the profession.

“He’s our 2009 Teacher of the Year, and he knows how to connect with kids,” said Principal Swift. “He works so well with them, and he is constantly engaging his students.”

The classroom gifts included a digital camera, printer, and swivel chair, as well as essential classroom supplies. Surrounded by his students, an excited Mr. Lane said “The supplies are unbelievable; I’ve never owned a briefcase or a digital camera before!”

To identify the classroom supplies needed by teachers, OfficeMax conducted research, surveying teachers and school administration on their greatest classroom needs, and these items were included in the classroom gift box.

“To give $1,200 worth of supplies to a worthy teacher is great, it’s probably the best day of the year for me,” said Natalie Osborne of OfficeMax. Stan Lane has been a teacher in the Wentzville School District for 15 years.
