THS juniors named winners in essay contest

Timberland High School juniors Megan Brillos and Jake Rice have been named winners in the Alpha Zeta Chapter of lota Phi Lambda Sorority’s 29th Annual American Education Week Essay Contest for middle and high school students in the greater St. Louis area.
This year’s essay theme was “Great Public Schools: A Basic Right and Our Responsibility.” Megan’s entry garnered first place and Jake’s entry took second place in the competition which yielded entries from six area school districts. Both students will receive savings bonds and be honored at the sorority’s annual awards luncheon on November 20, 2010 at the Airport Marriott Hotel in St. Louis. Megan will be the Youth Featured Speaker at the luncheon and present her winning essay. She will also advance to the regional level of the competition.
Megan and Jake are both members of the National Honor Society, take multiple Advanced Placement courses at Timberland and carry a 4.0 GPA. Additionally, Megan serves as the President Intern for DECA and the Entertainment Editor for the school newspaper, the Wolf’s Howl. Outside of school, she performs as a dancer with the Dance Connection Performing Arts Center and enjoys volunteering for Meals on Wheels and the St. Louis Crisis Nursery Center in Wentzville.
Jake serves as the Junior Class Treasurer, was the captain of the Wolves’ JV boys’ soccer team, plays JV baseball and was a captain for a 2009 Relay for Life team. Outside of school, Rice is involved with his youth group at RiverOaks Church and was recently honored as the Wentzville Rotary Club Student of the Week.
