Wentzville, MO
In recognition of National Water Week, the Wentzville Water Department has awarded $4,000 worth of scholarships to two students in the Wentzville School District. Allison Walker, a senior at Timberland High School, and Chris Clynes, a senior at Holt High School, have each won a $2,000 scholarship for their artistic fire hydrants. This is the 13th year for the contest, and each year Wentzville students are asked to creatively interpret a theme with their painted hydrants.
This year, dozens of students from each high school submitted “Go Green” designs for consideration. The Art Department at each school selected five worthy student entries, and these students were each provided with a blank hydrant. Five Wentzville city employees then judged the ten finalists, with the top hydrant from each school earning a scholarship for its creator.
When describing their creations, Chris said “I wanted it to appear like the green themes were actually inside of the fire hydrant, trying to get out!”
Allison stated “I wanted something with bold colors that would catch your eye. It’s about recycling all different types of elements like water, trees and metals.”
Both scholarship recipients plan on attending community college in the fall. Chris will be studying computer science at St. Charles, and Allison will be studying culinary arts at Forest Park. The colorful hydrants are currently on display outside the city water control building located at 802 East Pearce, under the old water tower.
