Students at Wentzville South Middle School, Heritage Intermediate and Duello Elementary answered the call from the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) to assemble “Kits 4 Kids” in an effort to help young earthquake victims in Haiti.

DESE is working in conjunction with the non-profit group Convoy of Hope and school districts across the state to assemble personal hygiene kits that contain shampoo, toothpaste, a toothbrush, soap, a comb and a hand towel in zippered plastic bags.

The goal is to collect 100,000 kits in 10 days for Haitian children. Heritage, Duello and South Middle School students together have collected over 900 kits for the cause.

“These are things people already have, and we’re putting them together because it’s going to help a lot,” said Heritage 5th Grade Ambassador Rachel Nelson.

Other Wentzville schools organized a variety of efforts to aid in the disaster relief for Haitian citizens, including “Hats off for Haiti” at Peine Ridge Elementary and Wentzville Middle School where children got to wear a hat for every donated dollar, and “PJ Day” at Boone Trail and Prairie View Elementary where students could wear their favorite pajamas to school for a donation. These efforts have raised over $3,400 so far for disaster relief in Haiti, and more events are planned in the coming weeks.
