Students who were enrolled in the Wentzville School District’s reading intervention program made great strides over the past year according to data released in May. Evaluations at the building level and by Scholastic Education Services revealed that 68% of the 348 students participating in the program gained one or more years of reading growth. Of those students, 46% demonstrated two or more years of reading growth.
The District utilizes a program called READ 180 for students in grades 6 – 12 who are identified as reading below their grade level. A small number of students in grades 3 – 5 also participate in the program. The intention, according to WSD Curriculum Coordinator Keri Skeeters, is to provide students with the support necessary to bring them up to grade level in reading. The goals of READ 180 specifically are to improve fluency and comprehension, build vocabulary, improve writing skills and set students up for success in all content areas.
“The greatest gift we can provide for our students is the ability to read and comprehend written text,” said Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment Dr. Susan Gauzy. “READ 180 is a marvelous program that meets the needs of struggling readers, puts them on the road to success, and allows for gains in reading levels. We are fortunate to have the resources and teachers to make READ 180 a viable option for students.”
