Discovery Ridge Elementary Principal Laura Bates earned the opportunity to rappel 19 stories down the side of the Four Season Hotel at Lumiere Place on Friday, October 1, 2010 as part of the “Over the Edge” event coordinated by Special Olympics of Missouri (SOMO).
The event highlights those individuals and groups that have raised over $1,000 for SOMO whose mission is to provide training and competition for children and adults with disabilities.
Principal Bates was selected to represent the Wentzville chapter of the National Education Association (NEA) which raised a total of $1,000 for SOMO through “Jeans Days” where teachers are permitted to wear jeans to school in exchange for a donation. An additional $525 was collected at a fundraiser dinner held during the first annual Discovery Days, a community-wide celebration that emphasized science and academics at Discovery Ridge Elementary.
“Many of our students have a close friend who participates in Special Olympics and they were interested in supporting the athletes,” explained Bates. “As a teenager I had the opportunity to rappel in the Stone Mountain area of Atlanta, Georgia. It was an experience that required courage and teamwork. Rappelling at the “Over the Edge” event in St. Louis was an opportunity for Discovery Ridge and the Wentzville School District to show our commitment to these same values as we support Special Olympics.”
