The Wentzville School District is teaming up with the St. Charles County Department of Community Health & the Environment (DOCHE) to help teach kids about how to prevent the spread of the flu virus.

DOCHE is creating a video to teach kids about proper hand washing techniques, one of the most important factors in preventing the spread of disease. Health Educator Hollie Milam and Public Information Officer Cameron Satterfield visited with students in Mrs. Pegg’s 3rd grade class at Crossroads Elementary, to talk about good hygiene habits.

Milam said, “They know a lot about the flu, and they really like to participate and show that they know what they’re doing.” These knowledgeable students were videotaped in the classroom and scrubbing at the sink for a public service announcement that the DOCHE will use on their website and on the St. Charles County government cable access channel.

The instructional video will include facts about why we wash and when we should wash, as well as the reminder that soap and water is better than hand sanitizer, and that proper hand washing takes at least 20 seconds.

Milam applied a washable paint to the students’ hands, and then had them wash with soap and water. She then used a black light to show students any areas they may have missed.

“It’s really cool, that you get to do that experiment,” said eight-year-old Emily. “It shows how much you really need to do it right when you wash your hands!”

The video is expected to be completed by the end of the month, and it will be shown on Charter channel 993 and channel 99 on AT&T U-verse, as well as the DOCHE website at www.scchealth.com.
