Holt seniors receive academy appointments

Holt High School seniors Daniel Zagaja and Nathan Wadsworth have received and accepted appointments to the United States Military Academy (USMA) and the United States Merchant Marine Academy, respectively.

Daniel is the son of Bob and Veronica Zagaja of Lake Saint Louis. He was nominated by Senator Claire McCaskill and Congressman Blaine Luetkemeyer for his appointments to USMA, the United States Naval Academy and the United States Air Force Academy.

He has decided to accept the appointment to USMA, located at West Point, NY. Daniel is ranked 4th out of 383 in his class. He has a 4.19 GPA and scored a 31 on his ACT. He is a member of the National Honor Society and an Eagle Scout. He was captain of the swim team, a member of the all-conference and all-academic swim teams and qualified for State Swim Finals. He has also run cross-country and track and performed as a member of the Marching, Symphonic and Jazz Bands.

Holt Principal John Waters said Daniel shows “tremendous initiative in the classroom” and “never allows mediocrity to infect his goals.” Forbes magazine named USMA “America’s Best College” in 2009. Upon graduation, Daniel will receive a Bachelor of Science degree and a commission into the Army as a 2nd Lieutenant.

Nathan, also a senior at Holt High School, has a 3.64 GPA, in ranked in the top 15% of his class and is a member of the National Honor Society. He is captain of the varsity basketball team, played for the JV soccer team and was a nominee for the American Legion Boy’s State Program. Nathan has also been active in outreach programs through his church and community.

“Nate is a trustworthy young man who models courtesy and respect in his interactions with his peers and teachers,” said Principal Waters and added that “he models a strong work ethic in relationship to his schoolwork.”

Nathan received a nomination for the academy from Congressman Blaine Luetkemeyer. The United States Merchant Marine Academy, located in Kings Point, NY, was named one of the nation’s top 100 best-value colleges for 2010 by The Princeton Review.
