Firefighters respond to trapped horse; house fire
January 7, 2010
Wentzville, MO
On the morning of Jan. 4 at 9:08 a.m., Wentzville Firefighters were dispatched to an animal rescue on Peine Road. When firefighters arrived they found a horse trapped in the ice after having fallen into a nearby pond. The horse was suffering from severe hypothermia and was obviously seriously ill.
Specially equipped firefighters in ice rescue suits entered the pond and broke the ice from around the animal and fitted the horse with lifting slings. Twelve firefighters were then able to pull the seriously ill horse from the frozen pond. Veterinarians from Mid River’s Equine Center responded to the scene and worked diligently to save the horse but were unsuccessful and it was necessary to euthanize the animal.
While firefighters were still at the scene of the horse, at 10:26 a.m., Wentzville Firefighters were dispatched to a residential structure fire on Tulip Bend Drive, just two blocks away from the scene of the horse rescue. Crews responded from the horse rescue, as well as from Lake Saint Louis Fire District, and arrived to find heavy smoke and fire coming from a single story residence.
The homeowner suffered from smoke inhalation and was treated at the scene and released by St. Charles County Ambulance personnel. Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire which heavily damaged the residence and caused damages that are estimated at over $100,000.
