In Wentzville Sunday night, there were two dumpster fires reported: one on Wall Street and one near Holt High School. Monday morning, there was a report of yet another dumpster fire, this one happening on Dartmouth Court in St. Charles, thus begging the question, “What’s with all the dumpster fires?”

I called Chief Worcester of the Wentzville Fire Protection District to get an answer. I asked if weather plays a part in these fires or if people are setting them on purpose. He told me dumpster fires are routine. So routine, authorities don’t investigate the cause. It is just trash after all and there is “no loss.”

Worcester said people may be throwing things away which cause chemical reactions or perhaps people are intentionally setting them. He said that it’s probably “a little bit of everything.”

Chief Worcester said that Wentzville experiences 15 to 20 dumpster fires per year and that for all of St. Charles County, there is probably a dumpster fire on a daily basis.
