One of the best things about opening a new school is the opportunity to start new school traditions. At Discovery Ridge Elementary in the Wentzville School District, the staff decided even before construction was completed on their new school that they wanted to create a community-wide celebration that emphasized academics and science.

“We want to be sure we’re putting the ‘discovery’ in Discovery Ridge,” said Principal Laura Bates. “It’s so exciting to see our community come together and support our new school!”

The Discovery Days activities centered around the science curriculum with an emphasis on astronomy, meteorology, and aerospace. Students had the opportunity to build kites and paper airplanes to observe the laws of physics, and Channel 5 meteorologist Scott Connell showed students how he uses science to predict the weather.

Members of the Astronomical Society of Eastern Missouri set up solar telescopes so students could view solar flares and sun spots, and St. Louis County police officers with Metro Air Support landed their police helicopter on the school parking lot, and explained to students how the helicopter works.

Music, PE, computer, and art classes also integrated elements of science into their lessons. The week-long celebration concluded Friday night, with a dinner and astronomy viewing at Brommelsiek Park, with all of the proceeds from the dinner benefiting Special Olympics.
