Students in Timberland’s Family, Career and Community Leaders of America club (FCCLA) in partnership with the Timberland Thespians organized “A Day of Silence to Stop the Violence.”
FCCLA officers Lani Tuitasi and Brianna Davis wanted to build on the success of their “Diversity Awareness” program from last year and increase student understanding of violence, victims and prevention.
“We want to communicate the importance of peace and love, especially as high school students graduate and go out into the real world,” said Tuitasi.
Thespians portrayed victims of violence and stood silently in the hallways between classes holding signs for the benefit of passing students.
“Some people might ignore us,” stated Davis, “but others are taking notice and saying ‘we should change’.” During lunch periods the Thespians staged a “violence simulation” that attracted a lot of attention and then sang “Where is the Love?” by the Black Eyes Peas.
Then in the afternoon, the same students who had stood silently in the halls spoke out against domestic abuse, hate crimes and cyber-bullying. Students Taking On Prevention—STOP the Violence—is an FCCLA national program “that empowers youth with attitudes, skills, and resources in order to recognize, report and reduce youth violence.”
