Dairy “Fully Fueled” stops at Crossroads

Students at Crossroads Elementary celebrated health and fitness on October 11, 2010 when the Fully Fueled Tour made a stop at their school.
Dairy Fully Fueled is a unique, mobile health tour that transforms school gymnasiums for one day into a nutrition and fitness playground while teaching students how to be healthy. Students in 3rd, 4th and 5th grades participated in the event.
The 2010 tour, which is sponsored by the St. Louis Dairy Council and funded by local dairy farmers, will visit 32 schools in Illinois and Missouri through November 19th. Crossroads was chosen as a stop because of the Physical Education Department’s efforts to encourage healthy eating and physical fitness, two things essential to student success.
Crossroads PE Teacher Jennifer Buford, who sits on the Wentzville School District’s Wellness Committee, applied to have the tour stop at her school.
“Since they only stop at 32 schools, I wasn’t sure about our chances, but I thought it was worth a try,” said Buford. “We work really hard to incorporate health and wellness into our PE classes and the students were so excited to hear that we were chosen as a stop on the tour.”
The Dairy Fully Fueled experience, which includes a Food Pyramid Climbing Wall and String Cheese Fun Run, is designed to engage students in making smart choices around eating and physical activity.
“With childhood obesity reaching epidemic proportions it’s never been more important for schools to take an active role in promoting healthy habits,” says Ellen Wheeler, Nutrition Educator with the St. Louis Dairy Council. “We created Dairy Fully Fueled to reward schools like Crossroads Elementary for being proactive when it comes to student health.”
