The St. Peters Police Department participated in increasing safety belt usage while conducting regular traffic stops on Wednesday, Nov. 26. Hundreds of people are killed on Missouri roadways each year because they do not take two seconds to buckle up. The usage rate among Missouri motorists is at a 77% usage rate compared to the national use rate of 81%.

In an effort to reduce the fatalities and encourage motorists to buckle up, the St. Peters Police Department had 20 officers participate in this program over a 24-hour period.

During the enforcement effort, officers issued 97 citations; including 14 seat belt tickets, one driving while intoxicated arrest, 49 speeding tickets, one careless and imprudent ticket, three following too close, four stop sign tickets, one failure to yield ticket, 10 other moving violations, and 14 non-moving violations. The officers also made two felony arrests, two drug arrests and recovered one stolen vehicle.

“Safety belts are your single best defense in a crash,” stated Chief Bishop. “Law enforcement will continue to encourage drivers to make a simple, smart choice to buckle up and Arrive Alive.”
