Gov. Matt Blunt Friday issued the following statement on legislation he called for to protect Missouri families from the threat of rising local property taxes:

“Homeownership is one of the greatest opportunities for personal wealth and savings, but our current local property tax system has become an increasing burden on Missourians. Mandatory rollbacks will protect Missourians from unexpected and unfair property tax increases.

“With the support of many members in the General Assembly, we have cut taxes, welcomed new business and made Missouri a better place to live, work and raise a family. Local property tax increases undermine our pro-growth, pro-family initiatives. It was imperative that the state take action to curtail local government’s ability to raise taxes because of flaws in the old law.

“This is one of the two issues I said I would call a Special Session for if the work was not completed. I commend the General Assembly, and particularly Senator Mike Gibbons, for getting the job done and sending me this important legislation to help protect Missouri homeowners from a system that has become the shadowy path to higher taxes in our state.”
