Update:
It has been confirmed that a 5.4 magnitude earthquake did occur Friday morning. The epicenter has been located 7 miles east of West Salem, Illinois and 3.1 miles deep. The epicenter is 128 miles east of St. Louis.

Many residents and pets awoke to vibrations. There have been reports of broken windows in St. Louis. Effects were felt as far away as Chicago and Iowa.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the largest historical earthquake in the the Illinois Basin—Ozark Dome region, an area covering parts of Indiana, Kentucky, Illinois, Missouri and Arkansas, was 5.4 magnitude in 1968. This earthquake damaged parts of Southern Illinois.

Reports indicate that 911 operators have been inundated with callers inquiring about the topic. Emergency workers are being cautioned to be aware of any damage.
