Westboro Baptist Church representatives picketed near St. Charles City Hall today shortly after noon. The handful of protesters arrived by van at the intersection of Monroe and North 2nd Street. North 2nd Street was closed from Jefferson to Monroe in anticipation of the demonstration, and police patrolled the crowd of approximately 200.

Counter-protesters were initially assembled on the steps outside City Hall. When the WBC protesters arrived, the counter-protesters moved closer to them. The counter-protesters carried flags and signs while chanting “USA! USA!” and singing “God Bless America.”

Westboro Baptist, a church based in Kansas, frequently protests at military funerals. St. Charles County recently passed an ordinance which puts restrictions on protesting at funerals.

According to the Westboro Baptist Church’s website, St. Charles and the State of Missouri are trying to shut down the word of God. The website also states that the destruction of Missouri is imminent.
