The Mid America TEEN CERT program is designed to teach students how to identify the types of disasters and hazards most likely to affect their homes, schools and communities. Young adults ages 12-18 (as well as adults) are trained to assist in the event of an emergency and or natural disaster, and to be prepared to assist their families and emergency services. The goal of Mid America TEEN CERT is to better prepare the community at an earlier age and offer positive extracurricular activities to the youth of St. Louis, St. Charles, Lincoln, Warren, Jefferson and Franklin Counties.

In January, FEMA recognized the program as one of the top three CERT programs in the country for productivity and initiative, and more recently made national CERT headline news when one of the program's young graduates saved an elderly neighbor from a fire (see http://www.citizencorps.gov/cert/certinaction/stcharles-mo.shtm for details).

"Since the program has grown so much and expands past the St. Charles County area, I thought it was a good idea to change the title to Mid America TEEN CERT", explains program director Mark Rosenblum.  "The instructors come from all over the region as well, and this way it is not all credited just to St. Charles County", Rosenblum said.  "Citizens from other counties might also feel more at ease registering for the training if it doesn't specify one particular county or municipality in its' name", he concluded.

The Mid America TEEN CERT program will be the focus of an upcoming radio show, and Rosenblum will be the host of the call-in talk show to discuss emergency preparedness and safety tips with listeners.  The show is to begin taping in mid-August.
