County workers encouraged to furlough
April 5, 2010
St. Charles County, MO
Last week, St. Charles County Government employees were notified that a voluntary furlough (temporary leave of absence without pay) plan will be implemented beginning April 8. This plan was authorized by the County Council in 2008.
“As you know, our revenue picture continues to decline and we are again taking action to adjust the expense side of our budget so that vital services can continue,” Director of Administration Chuck Gross said in a letter to employees.
“I encourage you to schedule your furlough time off—even if the dates are later in the year,” the letter stated. “With your help, we will get through this difficult period.”
Employees will be able to request up to five consecutive days off at a time and all fringe benefits such as insurance plans and accrual of vacation and sick leave, will not be affected.
The need to reduce personnel costs became apparent when sales tax revenue for January came in 14 percent under what the county had forecast in its 2010 budget.
