Celebrate Statehood Day

Celebrate the 188th anniversary of Missouri’s induction to statehood on Monday, Aug. 10 at First Missouri State Capitol State Historic Site in St. Charles. Sponsored by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, the event will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
Missouri officially became the 24th state of the United States of America on Aug. 10 1821. First Missouri State Capitol State Historic Site served as the meeting place for the state’s first legislators from 1821 through 1826.
This event will offer free hourly tours of the historic site, which includes the legislative chambers, governor’s office, and the Peck Brothers Dry Goods Store and residence. Throughout the day, guests can also watch living history demonstrations by costumed interpreters. At 2 p.m., Donna Ross will present a first-person look at Marguerite McNair, Missouri’s first First Lady. A former teacher and speech and debate coach at Parkway Central High School in Chesterfield, Ross has developed and presents programs that showcase the Victorian Era for the Missouri Humanities Council.
The Missouri Compromise of 1821 was the first act addressed by the Missouri General Assembly in their new and temporary quarters in St. Charles. Today, the Capitol building is fully restored and furnished to reflect this period. The state historic site is open seven days a week and offers tours.
