Two road construction workers were injured Wednesday when a load of rebar paving baskets they were delivering shifted weight and fell on them. Each basket weighed about 200 pounds, but it is unclear how many baskets fell on the men.

Emergency units were called to the construction site on Highway 94 South and Harvester Road at about 11:45 a.m. The construction site included many workers, so by the time the responders arrived at the scene, workers had already removed the rebar baskets.

The two men were Tramar Contacting, Inc. employees: Curt Peters, 51, of Hardin, Illinois; and Thomas Barton, 50, of Arnold Missouri.

Both men were taken to the hospital after the accident. Barton has since been discharged.

Peters was in critical condition as of Thursday at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. He is the father of four children.
