St. Charles County residents and guests will enjoy an entertaining opportunity to learn about the features on display at Smartt Field Airport during the second annual Summer Barnstormers open house. The free, family-friendly event runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 29 and Sunday, Aug. 30 at the airport located at 6390 Grafton Ferry Road near Portage des Sioux in St. Charles County.

“This is meant to be a family event that provides us with an opportunity to showcase the airport and aviation in the area, while providing an inexpensive weekend for county residents and visitors,” Airport Director Tracy Smith said.

Vintage aircraft—such as the B-25 and TBM Avenger bombers and Army Blackhawk helicopter—will be on display, and guests may tour the Commemorative Air Force World War II Museum. The first 100 children ages 8-17 that register each day can join flights aboard aircraft provided by the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) that is based at the airport, and the EAA will conduct a course to complete requirements for the Boy Scout Aviation Merit Badge at 9 a.m., Saturday.

In addition to the displays and flight opportunities, a number of exciting activities are offered. Craft exhibitors, vintage cars, and clowns will entertain visitors; while food and drink vendors will be stationed throughout the festival, and the Fly Girls Diner—located in the center of the activities—will be open. Due to regulations, guests may not bring food or beverages to the airport.

Owned and operated by St. Charles County Government, the airport is the base for the Commemorative Air Force, Skylink Aviation, the EAA, and St. Charles Flying Service.

To reach the airport from Highway 370, take Highway 94 North for approximately eight miles to Grafton Ferry Road. Turn left on Grafton Ferry Road, and the airport is located on the right. For more information, please call 636-250-3200.
