Recovered owl set free

St. Charles County, MO
| Last April, “Maltese,” a barred owl, broke a wing when he collided with a Wentzville fire truck as it was on the way to a house fire.
After having a pin inserted to fix his broken wing and months of physical therapy at the World Bird Sanctuary, Maltese was released back into the wild inside the August A. Busch Conservation Area.
At about 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 20, Cheryl Smith, the Foristell woman who named the bird, stood atop a Wentzville fire truck and released Maltese. The bird flew into a wooded area. Onlookers attempted to spy the bird after his departure, but Maltese proved to be great at doing what owls do--hide. Wentzville Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Michael Scott stated that the barred owl may not be especially large but is easily angered. As with any barred owl, careful handling was a must with Maltese. Related Articles Cheryl Smith wins “Name the Owl” contest
