Parks Department develops bird list
February 4, 2010
St. Charles County, MO
Dedicated to preserving and enhancing natural areas, the St. Charles County Parks Department staff has developed a haven for songbirds, waterfowl, raptors, and other feathered fliers inside their wonderful facilities. With a collection of thick wooded areas, open prairies, wetlands, and riverside ecosystems, these diverse habitats present opportunities to view a number of different birds in each of the eight St. Charles County Parks.
A new feature available under the Park Amenities heading on the department’s website, www.stccparks.org, will help birders and nature lovers track the migratory visitors and native birds spotted throughout the year in the County’s many regional parks. Updated by park staff—with contributions from visitors—the St. Charles County Parks Bird List notes the species’ spotted and the parks where these birds can be found. The online list will be maintained in a convenient PDF format and will be updated periodically to reflect new creatures spotted.
Along with independent visits to the park, guests are encouraged to join the department’s many programs devoted to birding opportunities. On February 13, the department will host its annual Eagle Viewing Passport Walk at Hideaway Harbor Park (begins at 9 a.m.) that will highlight the many bald eagles that return to the region each winter to breed and raise their young. In addition, a new program entitled Birdwatching Tours is planned at Indian Camp Creek Park (March 27 at 8 a.m.), at Klondike Park (April 10 at 9 a.m.), and Quail Ridge Park (May 1 at 8 a.m.). Later in the year, Passport to St. Charles County Parks Walks are scheduled at Louis H. Bangert Memorial Wildlife Area (June 12 at 9 a.m.), Matson Hill Park (July 10 at 9 a.m.), and Quail Ridge Park (August 14 at 9 a.m.) to view the bird life at these parks.
To view the St. Charles County Parks Bird List or to register for any of the upcoming birding programs, guests should visit www.stccparks.org. To add birds to the list, please send an email noting the species name and park location to parks@sccmo.org.
Formed in 1997 by the citizens of St. Charles County, the Parks Department currently operates eight parks within its system—with several additional properties under development. Located throughout St. Charles County, these regional parks offer open natural areas, an extensive trail system, picnic shelters, camping sites, special events facilities, fishing lakes, and much more.
