Hogsback Trail Reopened in Klondike Park

St. Charles County, MO
Thanks to the exhausting efforts of nearly 60 St. Charles County Parks volunteers and personnel, the popular Hogsback Trail has been restored and reopened for public use. The natural-surface trail in Klondike Park (4600 Highway 94 South near Augusta), which connects to the Lewis and Clark Trail and ultimately the historical Katy Trail, sustained severe damage during recent storms and had to be closed indefinitely. The new and improved trail was reconstructed and is better than ever.
“It took St. Charles County Parks Department staff and the volunteers nearly 400 hours of labor and sweat to move debris, dirt and rocks in order to get this popular trail reopened for the public,” said Parks Director, Bettie Yahn-Kramer. “Thanks to the overwhelming response of volunteers, the restoration project was truly a success.”
Parks personnel teamed up with members of the St. Louis Adventure Group (SLAG), Gateway Off-Road Cyclists (GORC) to restore Hogsback Trail during the emergency restoration Trail Work Day. Although, a large portion of the work was conducted during the work day, there was still a great deal of labor to be completed by St. Charles County Parks staff.
“This trail resurrection was very physically demanding in challenging terrain,” said Parks Program Coordinator, Bekin Youngblood. “Two new trails and a natural stone retention wall had to be constructed in order for the trail to reopen.”
