The Missouri Department of Revenue issued the following statement concerning the sale of personal information.

While we are disappointed with certain aspects of the preliminary ruling, remember, this is just a preliminary ruling.

We are pleased that we will have the opportunity to demonstrate to the court how our Integrated Motor Vehicle Driver License System will prevent the cheap sale of Missourians' personal information to out of state businesses and others who seek to profit from selling this information without the knowledge of the person whose information is being sold away and mined," said Director of Revenue Omar Davis.

In addition to protecting Missourians against the cheap sale of their personal information, our plan better approximates what it actually costs taxpayers to maintain these records for their primary purpose which is law enforcement.

Contrary to what has been reported on this issue, the personal information included in driver records was intended for law enforcement, not as a cheap way for businesses or the media to obtain or sell personal records without the knowledge or permission of the record holder.
