Once reconstructed, Zumwalt’s Fort, located in O’Fallon’s Zumwalt Park, will be the only War of 1812 site in the State of Missouri open to the public. The foundation stones for the project were placed in March.

Built by the Jacob Zumwalt family in about 1798, the Fort was never a military post. Rather, it was a refuge for local families in danger during the War of 1812. Jacob Zumwalt sold the property to Nathan Heald in 1817 for $1,000.

The Heald home, built in 1884 by Jacob Zumwalt’s son, Darius, is located near the Fort site. The Heald home is open for tours on Sundays during the months of April through September from 1 to 4 p.m. (except holiday weekends). Admission is $2/person.
