Woman charged with jewelry theft

On 11/26/10, the O’Fallon Police Department responded to Randy’s Jewelry, 309 South Main Street, in reference to a stealing of diamond earrings. A black female entered Randy’s Jewelry and engaged an employee in conversation. During this distraction, the suspect removed a ramp of diamond earrings valued at $13,732.00 from the counter and placed them in her purse. The crime was caught on video surveillance.
The suspect Anne Darleen Smith, a 65-year-old resident of St. Louis County, was identified from the surveillance video. A photo line-up was shown to two separate clerks at Randy’s Jewelry and both clerks positively identified Smith as the person who took the jewelry.
On 11/30/10, Smith was located at her residence and arrested. The purse and wig used by Smith in the surveillance video were seized as evidence. Smith was arrested at approximately 4:56 p.m.
The St. Charles County Prosecuting Attorney issued the charge of Theft/Stealing with a bond of $25,000 no ten percent authorized. Smith is currently in custody.
