Third grade students at Prairie View Elementary enjoyed a visit from a police helicopter on May 19, 2010. Students watched from a safe distance as the helicopter landed in their school yard, and then were given the opportunity to take a closer look and ask questions of the helicopter pilots.

Saint Louis County Police Officer Dan Cunningham and Saint Louis City Police Officer Doug Reinholz spoke with the students about what their job entails and gave them specifics about the helicopter and its many uses. Officer Cunningham told the students the helicopter is one of six used by Metro Air Support to provide assistance to the Saint Louis City and Saint Louis County Police forces as well as the Saint Charles County Sheriff’s Department. He also explained that the helicopter was recently purchased with federal stimulus funds.

Students asked questions that ranged from how much jet fuel costs (over $6 a gallon) to how often the helicopter is used to aid in pursuits (an average of three or four times a week). The visit was arranged by third grade parent and former police officer John Rehagen.
