On June 21, 2009 at approximately 2:25 p.m., Officer Michael Doerge, DSN 269, was dispatched to the 1100 Block of North Main Street for a report that a child had fallen into a pool and was foaming at the mouth.

One of the most feared calls a police officer can respond to is that of a child not breathing. As he was responding to the call, dispatch updated him with information that the 9-month-old child was not breathing.

Officer Doerge arrived at the scene within two minutes. He entered the house and saw the child lying on the floor unconscious and not breathing. Even though he was under tremendous stress, Officer Doerge immediately began CPR with great proficiency.

After two chest compressions, approximately one pint of water spewed from the child’s lungs and the child began crying. Officer Doerge continued to monitor the child until the medics arrived and transported the child to the hospital.

The victim’s mother, grandmother and aunt, along with a neighbor who had come over to help, were filled with immense gratitude for his quick response and life-saving actions.

By utilizing his training and experience, Officer Doerge saved a child’s life and brought credit upon himself and the entire O’Fallon Police Department. Officer Doerge was commended for his professionalism and dedication to duty.

From the O’Fallon Police Department.
