Kids sure to love the Public Works Fair

At O’Fallon’s 5th Annual Public Works Fair, which will be held from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 18, kids will be able to operate the mechanized arm that raises and lowers City trash and recycling carts, check the speed of their pitch with a radar trailer, and play a lively game of red-light-green-light with a real traffic signal.

The fair will be held in the west parking lot at Tom Ginnever Avenue and T.R. Hughes Boulevard , O’Fallon, Missouri 63366. Admission, parking and activities are free. The event commemorates National Public Works Week, May 16-22.

Parents, teachers, homeschoolers and daycare centers are invited to bring youngsters to the event, which showcases specialized vehicles and equipment used by the O’Fallon Streets Division, the Parks and Recreation Department, and Water and Sewer Operations. Additional activities include free safety and educational activities for kids, information for parents, free rides for all ages on the City of O’Fallon ’s Krekel Line Train, free hot dogs, chips, soda, water, and other giveaways.

“Both boys and girls like to climb up and sit in the driver’s seat of our big trucks and some of the machines that we use, whether it’s a backhoe, snow plow, trash and recycling truck, or a street sweeper,” said Ken Hammell , Director of the Streets Division. “If you’ve ever wondered what one of our service vehicles is used for, come to the fair and ask City staff about it.”

Some of the equipment to be displayed includes:

Combination Sewer-Cleaning Machine/ Easement Machine – Used to clear debris blocking sanitary sewer lines.
Wheel Saw – The 48” saw blade is used for cutting concrete.

TV Grout and Seal Truck – Equipped with a mobile video camera for inspecting sewer line interiors, plus equipment for pressure-testing joints and repairing leaks.
Water Main Break Service Truck – Carries all the equipment needed to respond to a water main break
Water System Model – Used to demonstrate the basics of a municipal water system; visitors can watch a model of a water tower fill up and distribute water to a house.
Radar Trailer – A digital display shows the speed of oncoming vehicles; kids can check how fast they can throw a ball
Wing Plow – A second plow blade mounted on the side of a snowplow so that two lanes can be plowed at once
Environmental Services Truck – Used to collect trash and recyclable materials. Roscoe, O’Fallon’s recycling mascot, will make an appearance, as well
Traffic Signals – City staff uses the signals in a game that helps teach children traffic safety.
Backhoe and Track Hoe – Used for excavating, carrying and loading materials, backhoes are equipped with four wheels for mobility, while track hoes move on rubber tracks like a military tank.
Street sweeper, mini-excavator, bucket truck and crane.
