On March 10, 2009, shortly after 2:00 p.m., a burglary in progress was reported in the 500 block of Prentice Drive in O’Fallon. Neighbors observed a subject not known to them entering a residence, so they notified police. The suspect was confronted by a neighbor and ran from the area with a bag containing stolen items. Responding officers searched the area with the assistance of a police helicopter. The suspect was located a short time later hiding inside an area business and was taken into custody without incident.

Further investigation revealed the suspect had burglarized several residences in O’Fallon and other areas in St. Charles County. His method of operation was to randomly check residences for unlocked doors after verifying no one was home. Once an unlocked door was found, the suspect quickly entered the residence and stole high dollar items. If he encountered anyone while checking the houses, he would claim to be looking for a lost pet. At present, it appears that only unlocked homes were targeted. Burglary charges are pending against the suspect.

This case serves as a reminder that many burglaries and thefts are simply crimes of opportunity. Basic methods of prevention can keep people from becoming victims. Simple things such as making sure homes and vehicles are locked and notifying police of suspicious activity can go a long way to deter this type of crime. Many citizens may rightfully feel secure where they live, but criminals oftentimes exploit this mindset. Certain areas can be targeted by criminals because they know people won’t take precautions to protect their property.
