Civil War re-enactment this weekend

The American Civil War positioned two prominent local families at odds shortly after O’Fallon’s settlement in 1856. O’Fallon’s founders, Arnold and Nicholas Krekel sided with the Union, opposing slavery. Darius Heald, whose land is now Fort Zumwalt Park, sided with the Confederacy.

From Sept. 11 through Sept. 13, Fort Zumwalt Park will host the sights, sounds, smells and tastes of wartime 1860’s. Battle re-enactments, medical demonstrations, era cuisine, a period dance and church service are some of the activities planned. Re-enactors will portray people from the time; and visitors will be able to interact with them, bridging the period and present day.

Prepare to time travel back to the 1860’s and note the following schedule:

Friday, Sept. 11:

The camp will be open to area schools from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Students will be able to ask questions of living history re-enactors and participate in demonstrations.

The camp will close at 5:00 p.m.

From 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. there will be a period dance; and string music will accompany Deborah Hyland, the dance caller.
