At approximately 12:52 a.m. on July 26, 2010 Lake Saint Louis Police responded to a call of a person missing from Woodlands Marina who might be drowning. When officers arrived on the scene, they interviewed several individuals who had been boating.

The subjects told police that a group of seven friends went out on the boat at about 10:30 p.m. and consumed alcohol on the boat. As they were returning to the dock the victim and another friend decided to take one more swim off the back of the boat. The friend swam back to the boat, but he and the others lost sight of the victim and started calling to him.

Three of the group jumped into the water to search for their friend. Unable to locate him for several minutes, the group then contacted Lake Saint Louis Police to report him as missing and feared drowned.

Lake Saint Louis Police officers, firefighters from Lake Saint Louis, O’Fallon and St. Charles City, EMS personnel and an officer from Missouri State Water Patrol conducted an extensive search for the missing teen. At 4:07 a.m. the young man’s body was recovered and paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene. The victim was identified as Cole Schlogl, a 17-year-old white man from Florissant, Missouri.

The investigation is ongoing and police are awaiting results from the Medical Examiner’s Office to determine more details involving the teen’s death. Although police are still gathering information, preliminary findings appear to indicate that the drowning was accidental. Police said that examination of the scene revealed no indication of foul play and that their agency did not have any charges pending in the incident.

Missouri State Water Patrol is conducting a separate investigation and charged one individual with boating while intoxicated (BWI) involving an accident. At this time police have found no indication that the condition of the boat’s operator had any bearing on the drowning.

“This appears to have been a very, very tragic accident,” said Chief Michael Force of the Lake Saint Louis Police Department. “It is heartbreaking for all involved and our sympathy goes out to the victim’s friends and family.”
