The St. Charles County Department of Community Health and the Environment announced Friday that the Green Tree Elementary cafeteria has won the 24 Carrot Gold Food Safety Excellence Award for its food service.

The award recognizes nutrition initiatives that “go above and beyond food code requirements to excel in sanitation, food safety, and employee education.” The Green Tree cafeteria is one of a select few food service establishments to receive the annual award out of 1,200 eateries in St. Charles County.

Green Tree cafeteria Manager Sherry McKernon said “they are a great bunch of ladies, and they work hard every day. They care a lot about the kids and they all have great attitudes!”

Green Tree has seven Child Nutrition Employees with a total of 54 years of school nutrition experience. On a daily basis they serve approximately 70 breakfasts and 450 lunches. They are a dedicated group and are always looking for ways to improve on their service to students, and they take a great deal of pride in maintaining a high score with their County health inspections.

“I am very proud of the Green Tree crew, and our entire department is top notch,” said District Child Nutrition Director Susan Raster. “They all strive for excellence and their hard work and attention to detail is always evident.”

To be eligible for consideration, recipients cannot have any critical violations in the last twelve months. In addition, at least ninety percent of the food facility managers at the establishment must have valid food safety certification. The facility must also have a valid St. Charles County Food Establishment Permit and be in good standing with the Department of Community Health and the Environment.
