Shriek! Too much leftover candy!

When we moved to St. Charles County over a decade ago, our trick-or-treater count reached about 115. Seriously.

Last night we only received about 30 gremlins and princesses at our door, resulting in a very scary situation this morning. Leftover candy. This year, our leftovers are mostly chocolate and incredibly difficult to resist.

Candy bars for breakfast. Candy bars after lunch. Curiously, we’ve been walking around the house more than usual today—straight to the Halloween bowl. Is this also happening at your house?

There must be wholesome solutions to this dilemma. Why, of course there are.

Try this recipe:

Mix up a batch of chocolate chip cookie dough.
Press the dough ¼ inch thick into an ungreased 9 x 13 pan.
Bake at 375 degrees until brown—about 15 minutes.
While the crust is warm, top with sliced candy bars.
Bake for another 3 minutes to just soften the chocolate.
Spread the softened chocolate as if frosting a cake.
Sprinkle the entire pan with a flake-type breakfast cereal.
Cut into bars.

Hurry…give it away:

Donate extras to a child’s classroom, senior center, food bank—or any kids who grace your doorstep.

Freeze out:

We are in the midst of chocolate abundance right now and, frankly, we just don’t appreciate it. Since holiday baking is around the corner, consider using chunks of milk chocolate as a replacement for chocolate chips in cookies.

If you are like I am, there are some days when you MUST have chocolate. Think of a freezerful of goodies as your emergency stash. You won’t even have to break glass for access.

When creating sundaes, milk chocolate shavings are better than a cherry on top. And, hey, since the ice cream is already out of the freezer, stir chopped candy bar pieces throughout for an inexpensive alternative to visiting frozen custard stands.

Thanksgiving at your house? Please guests by placing extra candy in bowls.

One more idea--stuff Christmas stockings with thawed, leftover Halloween candy.

There are plenty of alternatives to sitting around the house chowing on that extra candy.

Now, please excuse me while I retrieve something from the other room, coincidentally right by that plastic pumpkin full of goodies.
