O’Fallon’s Christmas tree and holiday recycling

As the holiday season winds down, O’Fallon, Missouri, residents are encouraged to take advantage of the City’s free, post-holiday disposal service by dropping live trees and light strands at specific City locations now through January 16, 2012.
- Live or natural Christmas trees (without ornaments, etc.) and light strands can each be dropped off in parking lots at Civic Park and O’Fallon Sports Park. Parking lots will be open dawn to dusk. Receptacles will be available for the light strands.
- Light strands also can be deposited in receptacles at O’Fallon City Hall, 100 North Main Street (63366), or at the Renaud Spirit Center (RSC), 2650 Tri Sports Circle (63368).
Guidelines for the Christmas tree drop-off:
Only live or natural trees without decorations can be dropped off; all ornaments, tinsel, lights, string or wire should be removed, and trees should not be bagged in plastic. Please do not drop off wreaths, shrubs or yard waste.
Guidelines for light strand recycling:
Recycle miniature light strands “as is,” with bulbs intact. But please remove larger incandescent light bulbs (found on older C-7 and C-9 string lights) before discarding the strands. Simply leave the strands loose and drop them into a receptacle without string, twist ties, bags, packaging, etc.
Need curbside pick up for trees? For a $10 fee per tree, O’Fallon residents can request to have their live or natural Christmas tree(s) scheduled for pick-up by calling O’Fallon’s Environmental Services Department at 636-272-0477. Trees must have all decorations removed and should not be placed in plastic bags. Trees will be picked up on Wednesdays through January 25, 2012. The cost will be added to residents’ bi-monthly bill.
Don’t let holiday gift wrap, boxes and cards go to waste – please recycle
Each year, Americans spend about $2.6 billion on gift wrap. Most of it is discarded, adding about 5 million tons to landfills around the holidays, or about 24% more trash than usual.
But in O’Fallon, these and many more items can be recycled, particularly wrapping paper, paper gift bags, cardboard boxes, cartons, and greeting cards. And most plastic and metal beverage and food containers also are recyclable – just look for the recycling logo on the package.
