Olivia Vick, a talented 3rd grade artist who attends Duello Elementary, was recently announced as a third place winner in a national Crayola art contest. Students were asked to create a picture that dealt with recycling, conservation, clean energy, and the many ways to protect the Earth’s natural beauty and resources.
The contest was open to Kindergarten through 6th grade students from across the country, and students were given the statement “Green—Earth’s Favorite Color” and asked to turn it into a fun, artistic and eco-friendly learning experience.
Olivia’s picture was based on a lesson about the Banyan trees of India and the Mangroves of South Florida. The title of her artwork was “The Living Tree” and was created with a combination of tempera paint and oil pastels.
Olivia’s artistic statement was “Conservation is protecting trees and animals. The tree could protect animals from storms. We need to conserve the trees.”
Her artwork is on display at the Crayola web site, along with 11 other Duello students’ and all of the other entries from around the country. As the 3rd place winner, Olivia will receive $50 and be published in March in the 2008/2009 Crayola art exhibition book.
