April 10, 2009
St. Charles County, MO
Learn ways to help protect and preserve the world around you at St. Charles County’s Eighth Annual Earth Day Extravaganza—organized by the County’s Parks and Recreation Department and the Department of Community Heath and the Environment.
Held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., on Friday, April 17 on the lawn outside the Historic St. Charles County Courthouse (at the intersection of Second and Jefferson Streets in downtown St. Charles), this free event celebrates products, organizations, and local projects that promote environmentally-friendly practices. In addition, the first 200 participants to complete an eco-scavenger hunt will earn a free, native Missouri tree.
As in previous years, myriad booths will showcase ideas ranging from home landscaping and energy conservation to outdoor recreational opportunities and recycled arts and crafts. In addition, the Wentzville VFW Post 5327 will offer a barbecue fundraiser over the lunch hours, with ample space available for picnicking with family, friends, and co-workers.
New this year will be informal, eco-themed discussions to offer additional information on how to improve and preserve our community. These sessions will be held in Room 115 of the County Administration Building. Discussion topics are:
*Emergency Preparedness—hosted by St. Charles Community Health Information Officer Cameron Satterfield (10:45 a.m.)
*Growing a Scented Garden—hosted by St. Charles County Horticulturalist Karen Nichols (11:30 a.m.)
*Restoring Natural Prairie and Woodland Communities—hosted by St. Charles County Forestry Supervisor Ben Grossman (12:15 p.m.)
Among the participating organizations are: Alliance for Astronomy, St. Charles County Division of Environmental Health and Protection, Greenway Network, Inc., RideFinders, St. Charles County Soil and Water Conservation District, Leftovers, etc., St. Charles County Health Department, Shaklee—A New You, Renewal by Andersen, Environmentally Sound Products of Missouri, Missouri Community Forestry Council, Missouri Master Naturalists—Confluence Chapter, St. Charles County Pet Adoption Center, St. Charles County Division of Emergency Management and the St. Charles County Parks Department.
