The Dervaes Family in Pasadena has started an urban homestead project they call, “Path to Freedom.”
Their normal suburban plot occupies one-fifth of an acre, though only one-tenth of it is cultivated. The family uses both front and back yards for growing food—6,000 pounds of produce per year.
Of course, their California garden offers a longer growing season than a Missouri one, but there is still so much to learn from them. The homestead also makes use of solar panels, a solar oven, gray water and biodiesel.
