Timberland High School senior Taylor Wohrley finished her prep career in style (and record time), winning state titles in the 100 yard backstroke and the 200 yard freestyle at the Rec-Plex in St. Peters. In the preliminaries she set a state record of 54.09 in the 100 Backstroke and a state record of 1:47.25 in the 200 freestyle beating her own record which she set last year.
Excellence has become routine for the 17 year old, who has won four consecutive state titles in the 100 backstroke, two consecutive titles in the 200 freestyle, and been named athlete of the state meet for the second straight year. She is the second local swimmer to be a four-time champion in one event, and she finishes her high school career with 13 state medals.
“I fulfilled my goals for high school swimming by going out with a bang” said the effervescent Wohrley. “I do it just because I love it so much, and I got to swim with my sister. It was a very rewarding experience!”
At the Olympic trials in July, she competed in the 100 meter backstroke against the best swimmers in the country, including world record holder Natalie Coughlin. Wohrley is also a member of the U.S.A. National Junior Team, an Honor Roll student, and a member of the National Honor Society. She will attend Indiana University on a swimming scholarship in the fall.
