Cost of postage stamp price to increase on May 12
February 12, 2008
Washington, DC
The United States Postal Service announced yesterday that on May 12, the price for a one-ounce First-Class stamp will increase from 41 to 42 cents.
The USPS states that the increase reflects at or below the rate of inflation as measured by the Consumer Price Index.
Postmaster General John Potter encourages consumers to buy Forever Stamps now for 41 cents, because they are good forever. Five billion Forever Stamps have been sold since their launch last April and there should be five billion more in stock to meet demand before the May price change.
The Feb. 11 USPS news release states that, consistent with the new Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act, prices for mailing services will be adjusted annually each May and that they plan to give 90 days’ notice before each price change.
Below are some of the price changes:
First-Class Mail Letter (1 oz) from 41 cents to 42 cents
First-Class Mail Letter (2 oz) from 58 cents to 59 cents
Postcard from 26 cents to 27 cents
Large Envelope (2 oz) from 97 cents to $1.00
Certified Mail from $2.65 to $2.70
New prices for shipping services such as Express Mail and Priority Mail will be announced in March.
