This is the time of the year for some change
December 28, 2007
Everyone knows this time of year can do a number on bank accounts and credit card balances. What’s worse is holiday spending sprees taint the fresh start of a new year.
However, there may be a financial resource left untouched, and nearly everyone has access to this money supply. Some may find a hundred dollars. Others may be able to retrieve a lot more.
This magic money source is loose change. It collects everywhere: purses, cars, drawers, countertops, top of the dryer and even in the kids’ rooms. After searching these and other spots, the found sum may be surprisingly tidy. Especially if an older or unusual piece is discovered and is identified as valuable.
It’s true that a jarful of nickels is real money, but the loose change should be converted into a realistically usable format. Some banks offer their customers free coin sorting and counting. Others give away coin-rolling wrappers just for the asking. The amount of effort used converting the change into paper money, is worthwhile. The thrill of the find is enough to keep most people motivated while dutifully rolling coins.
So, after the extravagances of the season, replace some debt with newly found wealth.
It's a head start for a financially healthy 2008.
