Stars of St. Charles County at Broemmelsiek
May 9, 2010
St. Charles County, MO
The Astronomy Viewing Area at Broemmelsiek Park will serve as headquarters for the St. Charles County Parks Department’s Stars of St. Charles County viewing events again this year.
In partnership with the Astronomical Society of Eastern Missouri and the St. Louis Astronomical Society, the Parks Department offers opportunities to search the nighttime skies during these free viewings. Advanced telescopes will be provided for the Stars of St. Charles County programs, but individuals may also bring their personal equipment, if desired.
The Stars of St. Charles County events will begin around dusk and will be open to all ages until around 11 p.m. Start times are scheduled prior to sunset to allow those with telescopes to bring and set up their equipment during daylight hours. Others should plan to arrive approximately one-half hour after the posted start times. Advanced registration is requested for large groups planning to attend the event, and those interested may call 636-949-7535 for more information or to register.
The Stars of St. Charles County viewings will be held on a weather-permitting basis. For questions regarding the cancellation of these programs, please call 636-949-7475.
Broemmelsiek Park offers picnic shelters, natural preserves, several miles of multi-use trail (open to hikers, bicyclists and horseback riders), fishing lakes, a dog park, and the Astronomy Viewing Site. From Highway 40/61, go southwest on Highway DD (WingHaven Boulevard) for approximately five miles to Schwede Road. Turn right on Schwede Road to the park, and the astronomy viewing area will be on your right.
In addition to the Parks Department’s events, the Astronomical Society of Eastern Missouri presents a public open house at the Astronomy Viewing Area. For two hours each Friday night throughout the year, on a weather-permitting basis, the group will offer free telescopes and provide further information on the night’s sites. For information on these public events or for questions about cancellation, please visit www.asemonline.org.
