Snow day merriment for everyone
February 1, 2011

Authorities are using the word “historic” to describe the potential of this week’s winter storm. It’s a blizzard. Literally. Even strict and uncompromising colleges have cancelled classes. The Gateway Arch is closed to visitors. Doors at many retail spots are locked.
Chronically confident (overconfident?) bad-weather drivers are parked at home as the snowstorm spares no one. Our entire region is sharing this mutual SNOW DAY, nay, SNOW WEEK.
As many parents know, a kid who won’t budge from bed for school suddenly becomes a morning person on a snow day and is ready for a winter party. What’s a parent to do?
Though there are millions of things which should get done, snow days are rare and should be cherished. For every closet cleaned, a family memory is sacrificed.
Here are some ideas of how to appreciate a snow day:
Get cozy inside
Make some hot chocolate
Play a board game
Put a puzzle together
Bake cookies
Make some soup
Call a relative
Dance
Have a tea party
Snuggle and read a story
Keep a diary to better remember this event
Get creative
Make friendship bracelets
Create a large paper chain out of construction paper strips
Decorate the house with hanging snowflakes
Make bird seed pinecones:
Smear peanut butter and bird seed on a pinecone. Hang it from a tree.
Dust off all the instruments in the house and perform a concert
Play outside
Build a snowman or entire snow family
Use sand buckets or other mold and build a snow fort
Shovel snow (remember to help the elderly with their driveways)
Have a snowball battle
Frolic with the dog in the snow
Take photos of outside objects, documenting the impacts of the storm
A snow day is a gift. Enjoy it before it melts away!
