Have you noticed? The sign on the O’Fallon Krispy Kreme building is obviously absent. The recognizable green and white striped awning now appears naked.

Don’t fret. Donut lovers in-the-know have been enjoying other local donut eateries for years.

An article showcasing these shops seems timely. Sunday I visited a few of them and will now present this unscientific “donut review” for your consideration.

The shops

Donut King, 662 1st Capitol Drive, St. Charles
Paul’s Donuts and Ice Cream, 1289 Jungermann Road, St. Peters
Granny’s Donut Shop, 6220 Mexico Road, St. Peters
Heaven Scent Bakery, 1133 Bryan Road, O’Fallon

The process

Three glazed donuts were acquired from each establishment (except Granny’s—they were sold out).
Samples of the donuts were placed on three identical plates, each labeled with the appropriate shop’s name on the bottom.
The plates were mixed out of order, so we would not know which store’s donut was being tasted.
Four friends were recruited to participate in the survey. “Quite willing” adequately describes these individuals.

The findings

We had differing opinions regarding which was the best one. Each donut had at least one fan in our group.

I hope readers find this review helpful and appreciate the hard work that went into its production.

Donut King in St. Charles features a more traditional style donut.

Paul's Donuts and Ice Cream in St. Peters

Heaven Scent Bakery in O'Fallon.

Donut King’s donuts reflected a traditional fried donut, a little crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. This donut was not overly sweet.

The glaze rested on top, as opposed to soaking inside. A tester exclaimed this donut was, “Good!”

Three glazed donuts at Donut King totaled $1.88.

Paul’s donuts were light and fluffy, absorbing the glaze instead of displaying an “iced” appearance.

Quotes from testers: “I like it.” “Sticky.”

Three glazed donuts at Paul’s totaled $2.58.

Heaven Scent’s donuts were airy and large. We noticed an underlying flavor, seemingly in the glaze. The group identified the flavor as lemon.

One tester noted, “Perfectly sweet.”

Three glazed donuts at Heaven Scent totaled $3.11.
