Representative Gatschenberger attended the bill signing of House Bill 922, which requires each school district to adopt a policy on allergy prevention and response with priority given to addressing potentially deadly food-borne allergies.

House Bill 922 requires school districts to adopt a policy on allergy prevention and response by July 1, 2011. The policy will be focused on addressing potentially deadly food-borne allergens. Under the legislation, the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education will be responsible for developing a model policy by July 1, 2010. Among other things, the policy must include elements distinguishing between building-wide, classroom and individual approaches to allergy prevention and management; describing the role of certificated and non-certificated staff, parents, and other students in preventing and mitigating allergies; and coordinating with other entities to ensure the efficient promulgation of accurate information and that existing school safety and environmental policies do not conflict.

“Anything that makes our schools a safer place and a better learning environment for our children, I will support.” Gatschenberger said.
