Are you rushing and always in a hurry? Of course, everyone is. We grab bites of fast food on the way to somewhere else. After a couple of decades of burn-out and fall-out some are re-defining the speed of the day.
At the Slow Down Now website, messages are that relaxing should be guiltless and that multitasking is a moral weakness. Drink some tea, chat with the neighbors, take a bath, but not all at the same time! The creator of the website admits it’s an “almost-serious antidote to workaholism.” I hope his notion gains popularity (at an appropriately swift pace).
There is also a movement afoot intended to slow our mealtimes, called the Slow Food Movement. It stresses the benefits of eating fresh, locally-grown foods while enjoying lively conversation and good company. Slow Food was founded by Carlo Petrini in Italy in 1986 and has grown to include about 80,000 members in more than 100 countries. It seems the whole world is tired of scurrying.
We perfected multitasking, searched for excellence and tried to manage “total” quality. All the while, we suspected our quality of life was suffering, but didn’t have time to explore it.
Those days are gone, and it’s time for a nap.
