Movie Review: FIRED UP

Released to DVD yesterday, FIRED UP is a summer comedy drenched in adolescent hormones, starring Nicholas D’Agosto, Eric Christian Olsen and Sarah Roemer.
It’s a simple plot: two popular high school football players decide to attend a cheerleader camp instead of grueling football camp. Of course, the sole motivation for their scheme is to score cheerleaders. These lovable, yet shallow characters eventually grow into guys who sincerely care about girls and even cheering itself.
If you have matured beyond snickering about body parts, maybe this film isn’t for you. But I found some scenes genuinely funny, probably because the cast seemed to be having so much fun.
Coach Keith, played by John Michael Higgins, provided plenty of giggles and Adhir Kalyan (Pahud in Mall Cop) also offered many sillies. As a weird side note, and forgive me for saying so; but I thought Nicholas D’Agosto seemed a little Owen Wilson-ish.
Anyway…
FIRED UP is irreverent, juvenile and very much inappropriate. But, come on—every generation needs their own Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Animal House.
Warning: Pay attention to ratings at the video store. We unintentionally rented the unrated version which includes a topless swimming scene. FIRED UP in theaters was rated PG-13.
