Accidents galore on rainy Sunday

What a crazy Sunday afternoon. Driving eastbound on Interstate 70 yesterday, between Warrenton and Wright City, my husband and I (and many other drivers) came to a dead stop. We assumed there was an accident further ahead on the highway but could not see anything. The semi tractor trailer directly behind us blinked emergency lights and was holding back. Everything seemed OK.

Then, out of nowhere, “KOWAMP!” The semi behind us struck our van. As we were rolling and stopping, I guess his foot slipped from the brake pedal (I don’t really know).

So, we motivated our van to the shoulder of the highway and the semi followed suit. Upon arrival to the shoulder, another accident appeared in view just a few feet ahead of us.

“Wow, three accidents so close together and all at the same time,” I thought.

Despite so much activity, the Warren County Sheriff arrived lickety-split. He ran our plates and checked insurance—the whole drill. Amazingly, our van only had a bit of paint scraped from the bumper. We were soon on our way.

Yet up ahead just a smidge, what did we spy in the westbound lanes? Another accident.

All totaled, we know of four accidents within minutes on that straight stretch of highway yesterday--a crazy, rainy Sunday afternoon indeed.
